Re: Language barriers in teaching

Hi Amy, What type of materials do you have to work with? There are a lot of great books for kindies to work with these days. Having a good book to do a a page or two in a class really helps. Use a lot of flashcards, flashcard games, draw pictures and sing songs. Also for young learners use TPR activ...

Re: Talking about forms to elementary kids

Hello,
In Korea I just tell my students that we do that because it is the law of English and they accept that because they are used to hearing about the "laws" of the Korean language in their Korean classes.
It works!!!

Re: Grammar for Kindergarten

Hello everyone, My colleagues and I have been successful in teaching grammar to kindergarten students. The students know how to use singular and plurals and "a" or "an". They also can use the past tense in a few situations. The students are already aware of singular and plural an...

Re: theory versus practice

I think theory is wonderful inspiration.
Studying theory leads me to contemplate the art of teaching a lot more and has certainly helped me to evolve as a teacher.
Even if I don't entirely agree with the theory it still helps me to develop.

Re: Out of control boys! How could I manage them?

Hello, I think your attitude is vital as well as having good techniques. You need to remain calm and centred inside even though in some cases you have to be angry on the outside. Remember you are the teacher and they are the students. Here are some videos of a couple techniques you can try: http://w...

Re: Lesson preparation

Hi Laura, I do zero preparation (unless I am starting a new book) for most classes although that has not always been the case. In the beginning and before I found my way I spent about an hour preparing for 5 classes. I rarely made notes as my lessons were all designed around textbooks. I looked over...

Re: Where to begin when teaching a young learner?

Hi,
I've been teaching young learners for the last 8 years.
I would like to recommend this site: www.monkeyface-esl.com
I'm sure you'll find plenty of comprehensive materials there.
There are teacher's guides too.

Re: A super-slow learner in my class, any suggestions?

Hello, It sounds like you are doing everything you can. I personally know of no "secret methods" to help you. I think you should try to be patient and just keep trying. Some of the weak students I've had have suddenly taken great leaps forward whilst others have continued to show few signs...

Re: The “Getting Students to Read” Problem

Of course content is extremely important but one thing that should not be overlooked is the difficulty level. If the level is too easy students may feel insulted and also that they are wasting their time. If the level is too high most students will be loathe to tackle it and have to put in a lot of ...

Re: am a complete newb with basic questions

As far as having no teaching experience goes that is not a problem. I know many teachers who started teaching abroad with no experience whatsoever and they have managed to find their way and some have become skilled ESL instructors. You've obviously spent a lot of time with teachers in the leraning ...
