Re: HELP - GAPY YEAR TEACHING IN CHINA
A degree is not a requirement for teaching in China, it's a requirement for obtaining a foreign experts certificate which is needed for a Z visa, sometimes called a work permit. Do not despair however, because it is possible to teach in China on tourist visas. I say visa's because at the moment you ...

Re: Where in China would you teach?
Go to Dave's EFL Cafe (Google it) for info on particular schools. China is the third largest country in the world, and it has a population of 1.3 billion people. Asking where the best place to go is both meaningless and impossible to answer. The weather, the culture, the landscape is so varied, that...

Re: Which job should I choose?
There are essentially two types of teaching job in China. Working for a university, or working for a private language school. A university job will require a minimum of a Bachelors degree, and involve working with adults who have a reasonable grasp of English already and some of who may have very go...

Re: Visa/work permit confusion - please help
In China certainly you are right, the convention is to get the job first, then sort out your Z visa before you go over. There's no more red tape involved than would be for a tourist visa to be honest. You need to send copies of your passport, degree certificate and a medical exam, which the employer...

Re: Help Needed
The subject of not having a degree comes up a lot on TEFL forums. Generally speaking it is not a requirement for teaching, but for obtaining a work visa for the country you want teach in. That being said, there are still some countries you can obtain a visa for without a degree. I don't have a list ...

Re: U.S. Citizenship means fewer job opportunities?
Have you considered teaching outside of Europe? It's a shame, but I can understand the reasoning behind it. Europe is awash with European TEFL teachers who need neither Visas nor work permits, so it's easier and cheaper for the language schools to hire them. The flip side of that is that it is damn ...

Re: New to tefl teaching: is age a problem?
I'm teaching in China at the grand old age of 44! The age thing seems to differ from school to school, let alone country to country. The best advice is to ask the schools you want to work for, they'll soon let you know if your too old.

Re: CELTA - what to do next??!!
First decide where you want to work. It's a big wide world, so even narrowing the choice down to a continent would help. Then spend at least a couple of weeks studying the Internet forums and boards. Read first. There are few things more irritating to board members than new members who obviously hav...

Re: QUALIFICATION
The i to i online course is a perfectly adequate qualification for most TEFL jobs abroad. The exceptions are some Universities that will require a degree in English Language or related subjects. As far as teaching English in a language school in the U.K.though, it is of no use at all. You say "...

Re: List of countries where old is/isn't too old
The degree requirement in a lot of countries is for visa, rather than teaching purposes. You could have a degree in biology, which wouldn't be terribly helpful in teaching English. If your a native speaker and have a TEFL certificate you shouldn't have too many problems satisfying your teaching obli...

Re: Experienced EFL but no B.A.
The degree requirement in many countries, certainly in China and Thailand, is really required to get a proper working visa, not as a teaching qualification. You may have a degree in biology, not very helpful in teaching English. In China certainly, you can teach without a Z, or working visa, and man...

To be honest, you'd be far better looking online for a job, and try to avoid agencies, they're a minefield. Always better to apply straight to a school where possible.

Re: Help! How to deal with an arrogant ESL class?
I am starting to agree with what "systematic" has to say because I feel that we the FTs are hired merely to meet a terribly resented national educational requirement. Even the students know that their actions in my class are not going to have any effect at all, so they expect me to monkey...

A lot of people teaching here are currently on tourist of business visas anyway, since the Government changed the rules after the Olympics. Working on a tourist visa or a business visa is illegal no matter where you are in China. Oh, really! How stupid of us all not to know that  I guess we s...

None of your points were questions. People as stupidly arrogant as you don't ask questions, you're too afraid of debate.

Come to China. It's a great place to teach, especially in the South where the weather is quite warm. There are lots of vacancies in China, and as well as a generous salary, you can expect rent free accommodation, and if you take a years contract you'll be reimbursed for your return air fare and visa...

Have you considered therapy for your weird masochistic tendencies? Seriously, the wimps option? Get a life. I have a huge desire to see the world and experience it's culture's and languages first hand, that's why I came to China. That's why I'm committed to staying in China for at least five years, ...

Re: For people who want to work in China
Why not just secure a job before you come here? I can't see the point in spending your own money on coming to live in a place where you know no one, don't speak the language, and have no contacts. There are hundereds of vacancies in China with reputable companies and schools who will help you get a ...

Re: i-to-i job placement guarantee or going alone
I've just completed i to i's forty hour online course, and I'm off to teach in China in two weeks. I didn't get the job through i to i though, I just looked through the job forums on various EFL websites. From what I gather through reading i to i's own literature on job hunting, Spain could be a tou...
