age discrimonation in TEFL in 2024
Are there any countries where age discrimination is not a big problem? I am a 60-year-old who is teaching in the US but I miss overseas work. Most of my prior experience was in Saudi Arabia, but it doesn't hire teachers over 55, and I wouldn't want to go back there anyway. I'd want a good package an...

article on teacher shortage in South Korea
According to the article, Korea is suffering from an English-teacher shortage due to American graduates getting jobs at home rather than going abroad. I wonder if poor pay also contributes to the Korean problem? Salaries offered in Korea appear to be only entry level. Also, the article states that l...

Contract upon arrival?
I recently had an online interview with a recruiter for a teaching position in a remote town in Saudi Arabia (I reside far away—on the other side of the country.). A couple of days later, the interviewer sent me an offer. The offer was laid out in seven points. The first six covered salary, housing,...

Re: How do you feel about online tutoring?
I seldom teach children online. And you may be right: children may be more comfortable in a brick-and-mortar setting. In any case, I strongly believe there should be a minimum age (six years old?) set by online schools for children. Teaching a three-year old online is just insane!

Re: taxes and online teaching
In addition to salaries that are often low, there is another problem: taxes!
$15 an hour can go a long way in a Third World country. But some tax systems—such as that of the US—are regressive so taxes take a big bite out of that.
In any event, it's important to consider the taxes you'll pay.

salary expectation for EFL teacher in KL, Malaysia
I recently had an interview with a language institute in Kuala, Lumpur, Malaysia. It went pretty well, and the director asked me to email him with my salary expectations. I am an experienced and qualified teacher, but I am not certain to to best handle this. I am not in the Malaysia at this time. Th...

Well-paying teaching jobs with flexible hours
I teach online with a well-known company. It is a part-time job and I do somewhere between 15-20 hours per week. I really enjoy online teaching and I believe it will continue to grow in importance. One thing I like about my job is the flexibility of not having a rigid schedule or a minimum number of...

Re: How do you feel about online tutoring?
Sadly, there are many truly awful online teaching jobs. I just read a job advertisement on another site. The advertised position requires a degree and: - Commitment to teaching minimum of one complete semester (6 months) - Punctual and responsible work ethic - Positive attitude - ...if you perform w...

Re: Online learning discussion
As a person who had a chance to study both offline and online can say that, yes, learning online is different, and it's not always easy, but I believe that such education is as quality and effective as offline. Mostly, success depends on the person, because online you can find everything for studyi...

Re: How do you feel about online tutoring?
I believe the pandemic accelerated trends that preceded it. The disparity between rich and poor was magnified; unions are springing up in the USA in response. Online shopping and online learning became much more popular. Online learning will continue to expand as Internet connections are enhanced by...

Re: Shabaka Training has a bad reputation
Shabaka's cowboys have somehow managed to survive during the pandemic and they're recruiting again. At least one of the thoroughly discredited and quintessentially unprofessional, Bahrain-loving Dixon boys is still there—masquerading as an academic manager. The tumult brought about by the pandemic l...

Re: U.S. Citizenship means fewer job opportunities? - WHY THERE ARE ISSUES?
TEFL is First and Formost about TEACHING!..... Ok Here We Go....(and before the knives. daggers and claws come out, I am British but lived in the US for 32 years (served 22 in the Marines, have lived and travelled all over the world) ... The first and most obvious issue is Visa/immigration Status.....

Re: Are any countries open to EFL teachers abroad?
Does anyone have any up-to-date information for American teachers? I'm afraid we are last in line for the relatively few jobs because of our unfortunate Covid-19 situation. How about Taiwan? Thank you for your responses.

Re: Are any countries open to EFL teachers abroad?
I was just informed that China is closed to Americans. In fact, I think Americans have the fewest choices right now. Teachers from Canada, Britain, Australia, and other nations usually face fewer restrictions.
This is largely Trump's fault!

Re: Are any countries open to EFL teachers abroad?
I see. I applied for some online jobs and either I turned them down or they turned me down. The vast majority of those online jobs are for teachers of very young children, and that is not my forte.

Re: Are any countries open to EFL teachers abroad?
Thanks for replying. Even in the best of times, working with recruiters is problematic. Today, they don't want to tell potential teachers that they have no idea when things might be back to normal.

Re: Cambly- Lack of Integrity and Mismanagement- Please Take Caution! San Francisco CA!!
I was not too surprised to read your critical review of Cambly. I had been interested in teaching there because I thought it was one of a very few places where I could teacher older students.
Can you suggest another website for teaching older students? Thank you.
