ESL Job: Full-time ESL Job Wanted: China, Beijing (only)

Posted By: Sam Haydon
Date: 6 February 2014

 Date of Birth: 17/03/1984

In 2007 I graduated from the University of Bradford with a BSc in Environmental Geography.
I then worked for 3 years at Ernst & Young, leading a small team in records management.
In 2011, I completed TEFL training and travelled to Beijing, China, to teach in a state-run primary school teaching ESL English to students in Grades 1 – 5. A position I still hold.
From slow beginnings in China I have acquired many of the practical skills necessary to become a good teacher. I was the first foreign teacher the school had ever hired, so not only was it a shock for me to be standing in front of 40 students from day one, but also a shock for the students as they looked upon a very nervous looking, pale-faced foreigner! I was given the responsibility of creating oral English lessons based on the Chinese curriculum. Time management, discipline, and engaging students of different skill levels have been the toughest hurdles in my experience to date, yet now I feel I have demonstrated my aptitude for these facets of teaching.
During my second year, I was asked by a Chinese family to help start up, and teach, an after-school club focused on improving students reading skills. I was responsible for the content and structure of the lessons, and also for measuring the progress of the students. This was different to my day job as the groups were much smaller and teaching was more specific to individual students' needs. This work was particularly rewarding, and I built up strong relationships with the students and their parents.
During my time in China I have increasingly realised that teaching is very rewarding and enjoyable for me, and that a career in teaching is now my goal.
