RELEVANT EXPERIENCE

During my NVQ childcare course I spent around 200 hours in various primary schools in Liverpool, York, Birmingham and my home town of Whitby on a voluntary basis. The requirement was 50 hours but I believe that you can never have too much experience and anything you pick up along the way in terms of experience in my opinion is invaluable.
Another course I completed in the summer of 2013 was the ‘Essential Knowledge of Key Stages’ with Developing your Potential Recruitment. This course included elements of the PGCE teaching course and included areas such as; classroom management, effective lesson planning, personal professional development and safeguarding children.
For a number of years I have been and still am teaching the guitar privately to a wide range of students of all ages and abilities, something I love to do because of my background in music. I can draw a lot of similarities between teaching music and language, I believe the fundamentals are very much the same so being able to experience teaching in a different area is very good for my personal development.
For the 5 weeks I studied for my TEFL qualification I set up my own small language school in Liverpool on a voluntary basis for any students willing to attend and learn English. This was free of charge to everyone and purely set up to meet new people, practice teaching English and gives foreign students a regular meeting place where they could learn English and meet new people themselves. I found this to be of great pleasure and a wonderful learning curve for me personally and a fantastic opportunity to gain some teaching experience.
I now work at Corinthian Primary School in Liverpool as a Learning Support Assistant where I teach numeracy intervention to a number of small groups of pupil. I take 5 groups of pupils aged between 10-11 years old every week for three sessions to improve their numeracy skills.
I also work with the year 3 classes who are aged between 6 and 7 by doing intervention in numeracy, writing, literacy and phonics classes. The aim for my school year is to raise attainment of those pupils who need extra support in areas of their school work, specifically numeracy. My duties with the pupils at the school include:

• Counting and understanding number
• Knowing and using number facts
• Calculating
• Child safeguarding
• Lunchtime supervising
• Planning and delivery numeracy lessons

I believe the fact that I am no stranger to the education sector and that I am employed within it shows that I am eager and willing to begin a new TEFL career teaching English abroad. Teaching has become a passion of mine and I already have 5 years teaching experience in a variety of environments.

HOBBIES/INTERESTS

I have had a great passion for music since the age of eleven and have formed, written for and played in numerous groups and bands over the last seven years. I continue to enjoy performing and writing music to this day although it is becoming increasingly difficult to make time for it with my teaching responsibilities.

Another passion of mine is language. A keen speaker of French for many years during school led me to work in the French Alps for 10 months in between college and university as well as take part in foreign exchanges when I was fifteen. My fiancée is Spanish and so for this reason I have taken up Spanish and hope to be fluent within a year or so.

Experiencing new and different cultures is a great way to broaden the mind so I would love to move abroad and teach English as a career in the future.

I also enjoy keeping fit by attending the gym three times a week.
