English Language New Year’s Resolutions – A worksheet by Paula Swenson
A New Year’s Resolution is a commitment that an individual makes to a project or the reforming of a habit, often a lifestyle change, which is generally interpreted as advantageous. The name comes from the fact that these commitments normally go into effect on New Year’s Day and remain until fulfilled or abandoned.
It is believed that the Babylonians were the first to make New Year’s resolutions, and people all over the world have been making (and breaking) them ever since. The early Christians believed the first day of the new year should be spent reflecting on past mistakes and resolving to improve oneself in the new year.
Experts say that for resolutions to be effective you should keep the following guidelines in mind:
Be realistic by setting achievable goals.
Describe your resolutions in specific terms. Instead of “I want to be more active,” opt for “I want to exercise 4 times per week,” goals need to be measurable.
Above all, aim for things that are truly important to you, not what you think you ought to do or what others expect of you.
