Comfort food is typically inexpensive and easy to prepare. It usually has only a few ingredients. Many people eat comfort food when they are stressed or unhappy, because eating something familiar makes them feel better.
There are many reasons why a dish might be considered a comfort food, but most often there are very pleasant memories of the food going back to childhood.

Favorite homemade comfort foods in the USA include macaroni and cheese, mashed potatoes, applesauce, chicken soup, pizza, peanut butter, and ice cream. For breakfast, oatmeal or bacon, eggs and hash brown potatoes.
Traditional comfort foods in the UK include beef stew, bangers and mash (sausage and mashed potatoes) and fish ‘n’ chips.
In Mexico comfort foods such as tortilla soup, menudo (tripe soup), roasted chicken and tamales are popular.
Japan has many types of comfort food, often simple and hearty dishes like miso soup, ramen or Japanese curry.
