Market Leader Pre-Intermediate (Old Edition) Unit 4 Alternative Lesson Plan

(This is a lesson to cover about half the unit after already doing presentation and maybe some practice for Past Continuous.)

1. Get students miming typical actions in their jobs and the other students guessing what they are doing using Present Continuous (There are worksheets with this here and on Usingenglish.com)

2. Get them to continue, but this time shouting “Stop” when they think they can guess and giving the sentence in Past Continuous

3. Get students to accuse each other of doing unprofessional stuff (Last time I passed your office you were sleeping) etc. The person who is accused has to give a good reason why they were doing it.

4. Discuss if any of the things might be acceptable because they help with creativity at work. Brainstorm other stuff that could (doodling, yoga, meditation etc.)

5. Give out photocopied copies of only the top half of page 40 and get them to brainstorm ideas for how to use that material in groups. If they can come up with some good ideas, they should choose the best and present it to the class. Otherwise you can give them a copy of one of the ideas at the bottom of page 40 and let them present that.

6. Discuss who came up with the best ideas and what the secret of their creative success was.

7. Especially if you didn’t need to give them the ideas on page 40, you can let them brainstorm and present to decide which was the most innovative idea from page 36-37, first brainstorming just from a photocopy of the photo, then with the accompanying text to help them.

8. You can then do the vocab on pages 34/35 on the same topic.
