TEFL joins the North South divide

“International House Newcastle – The only school in the North of England that is accredited by British Council”

All the other school oop North were banned because of health and safety concerns with the presence of racing pigeons and whippets in the school, and misunderstandings by the Child Protection Agency of the teachers having ferrets down their trousers. On the plus side, the Dark Satanic Mills the schools were based in were judged to be a considerable improvement on the average building of an Oxford Street language school in London.

Joking aside, it can’t really be true that there is only one British Council accredited school north of the Watford gap, can it?

No, indeed it can’t. Unless the Yorkshire Liberation Front has indeed succeeded in having Scarborough split off from the rest of the UK (and who would want to stop them??). Took me all of 45 seconds looking at the A-Z list of British Council accredited schools to find out that International House or, giving them the benefit of the doubt, the agents that published that sentence having been telling rather large porkies. Now that I’ve had my fun with Ecky Thump cliches, might well write to them and find out what has been going on.

    Lesson one:

Teacher writes ‘waayyy eeyyyeee, ya divn’t wanna gan there’ on the board and asks the class to correctly identify where stress is placed.

  2. Sandy Says:

Surely there are schools in Leeds and Manchester that are BC-accredited? Go give ‘em hell, Alex – I’m a bit tied up at the moment!

IH Geordieland got back to me in record time, and it seems I misread, but in my own defence it is a bit ambiguous:

“The only school in the North of England that is accredited by British Council, a member of the International House World Organisation of language schools and a member of EAQUALS.”

Which I took as all three separate claims but is apparently one (much less impressive) thing.

Alex, please rewrite the following in reported speech: ‘…and Smith must score.’

Do you know anything about EAQUALS? I have one or two choice words to add if you’d like.

A few words about The Seagulls? Please go ahead

Ah, perhaps you mean IH Slapperville. Same answer, anyhow

  6. Alex Case Says:

Oh, the irony! Not only did taking the piss out of IH make Google ads suddenly decide that meant I wanted to recommend IH Hungary, four people clicked on the link! Do they now owe me money for taking the mick??
