Online CELTA on the way
Official Cambridge PR announcement
Hattip to TEFLista for pointing out this out to me, via a thread on Evil Dave’s. Seems the teaching practice will still happen face to face as now, and it could be a good thing if it persuades more people to do the course part-time and so have more time to absorb the material and observation feedback, but don’t know if that will be the effect as Bell-online has people rushing through Module 2 of their DELTA (observations etc) CELTA-style.
Having been an online DELTA tutor but having done my own DELTA part-time face to face over 9 months old-school-stylee, I’d definitely recommend the latter if you can. Of course, many people don’t live within travelling distance of a DELTA or CELTA course (or perhaps broke their leg and so couldn’t travel to Madrid from Avila like someone when I did mine!), but more people doing the CELTA or DELTA online and course suppliers being able to charge the same while cutting down on costs that way will almost certainly mean a replacement of face to face courses with online ones rather than just the one supplementing the other. The other thing is that if Cambridge don’t offer this option, many people may just end up doing a crappy course from the Oxbridge Euro-Lingua South Sloan Square School of English.
In summary, this is not one I can add to this list.

Hi Alex,
Having done my CELTA face to face many moons ago and having done the Dip TESOL a several moons ago face to face from necessity I can say that face-to-face for me was the better option. I did a nine month online Dip course with a month face-to-face for the teaching practice. It was a while ago now but I still remember feeling a bit isolated. On-line courses for me are a great option because of where I live (an island off the coast of north Africa) which makes things quite difficult but on-line hopefully will never replace the up close an personal thing I hope.

Exactly. There is nothing inherently wrong with online courses, but it’s the fact they charge the same tuition fees as a face-to-face course that grates. Like you said, the colleges/universities are saving lots of money doing it this way so if they offer a course online, it should have a cheaper price.
