Adverbs of Frequency for Points game

As I’ve been short of both time and inspiration recently, thought I may as well post some games I’ve used but never written about. Came up with this one last week:

Put a ranking of adverbs of frequency on the board (probably by eliciting it), something like:

Always

Almost always

Usually

Often

Sometimes

Rarely

Almost never

Never

Then put a number of points next to each one, e.g:

Always – 7

Almost always – 6

Usually – 5

Often – 4

Sometimes – 3

Rarely – 2

Almost never – 1

Never – 0

Students take turns asking each other “How often do you…?” questions, trying to think of ones that their partner will answer “Always” or “Almost always” for. The person with most points when you stop the game wins. I tried it with a one-to-one class and it worked really well (apart from the fact that I lost the game), plus hopefully the numbers helped emphasize the differences between the adverbs. I also allowed “Once a week” etc answers, in which case we discussed and agreed how many points that was worth.
