Give us a job!
As people who have been reading recently probably knew even before I did, we’ve decided that a change of scene and job (again) is much easier than actually sorting my life out, so the Case family are moving on at the end of October. We’ll probably make use of the free babysitters (i.e. my in-laws) in Japan for a while unless something good comes up elsewhere, but if you know anywhere that could make use of my odd mix of cynicism/ geeky keenness, very young learner experience/ business and ESP experience, loving writing but hating sitting down in front of a computer rather than moving around, etc, then I’d love to hear from you via email (see Contact Me button top right) or comment below.
It’s pretty much Mission Accomplished during our time in Korea. I proved to myself that I can still teach and even teach other nationalities, which any teacher who has been in Japan for a while will tell you is a constant doubt. I’ve also pretty much held up my end in a school full of professional teachers. I haven’t learnt nearly as much about Korea as I wanted to (and hardly any Korean), but it has given me an interesting comparison to my chosen specialist subject of Japan. We’ve also saved a bit of cash, which won’t be happening back in the Land of the Sinking Economy.
As to the crunch question that a couple of people have asked me of what I want to do next, wwwwweeeeeeeelllllll…
- I love writing and have hundreds of unfinished articles and worksheets that I’d love to polish off, but a whole day sitting still in front of the screen drives me nuts and my eyes funny, and being forced to interact with people at work is very much what I need from a job
- Feel like I should get back into full-time teacher training or management, but I much prefer teaching
- Would like to get more into Business English/ ESP again, but I quite like mixing that up with kids’ classes, IELTS etc
At the moment, I’m thinking that the only solution would be for the owner of TEFL.net to win the lottery and offer me 100,000 pounds a month or so to finish those articles and worksheets off (which I’ll do by my pool, so I can have a quick dip to stave off the physical restlessness for a while), and me to supplement that with a class or two a day of only very cute and well behaved kids or incredibly intelligent and motivated adult students who are all happy for me to try my wacky new ideas out on despite paying the highest fees in Japan. Get yourself to a temple to listen out for lucky numbers at the sermon, Josef!

Hi Alex, i was trawling through last July’s entries on my own blog and found that you had left a comment so i thought i’d pop into your blog to see how things are.
They seem good even if undecided.
Remember what John lennon wrote in one of his songs – life is what happens whist you’re busy making other plans.
Good luck, have fun.
