University education quote of the day

“…at that time the funding of Sanskrit and science were about the same at Oxford”

Sir Richard Sykes on BBC Radio Four’s Great Lives:Howard Florey.

Obviously that is no longer true, but the attitude amongst universities that they know what is best does remain. Or maybe that’s just my excuse for never finishing my MA or getting a cushy university job…

Howard Florey, by the way, was the man who was really responsible for penicillin being used as a drug to cure people, and shared the Nobel prize with Alexander Fleming. However, it seems people can only get excited about scientific ideas if they can see it as the product of one special brain, and so Alexander Fleming as scientific god it was… Remind anyone else of the person and ideas of Noam Chomsky and Stephen Krashen??

There is are several pages of Florey stuff on the fabulously named Tall Poppies site (named after how Australians usually mow tall poppies- read anyone successful- down). And if quotes are your thing, you could double the daily views on my newish QuoteJapan blog all on your own, and there’s even a whole page of Japanese Education quotes to make it vaguely relevant to you…
