The 200 word TEFL challenge
Perhaps the most commonly asked and most difficult to answer question about TEFL is “Should I do it?”
Although I’ve never felt the irritation at being asked this question that the average TEFL forum regular shows (if they have such problems with feelings of frustration, I really would recommend entirely a different kind of website!), it isn’t the easiest of questions to answer without regular sessions with the person asking the question and a couch (I mean therapy, not what yot were just thinking). But, wthell, if someone can write their life story in 6 words, TEFL in 200 words has to be possible:
“TEFL will provide you will a chance to work abroad and support yourself for a couple of years, but the vast majority of people change jobs and/or go back home after that time with some language skills and life experience, but little money in the bank and without a clear life plan. Make sure you do not burn your bridges (would it make sense to rent out your house rather than sell it?) and that you have a plan B if you do end up back home. Even if you abandon this plan (mine was to become a social worker- close escape!), having one can also take some of the pressure off making your time abroad a “success”, allowing you to enjoy it more.
Although few people regret having taught abroad for a year or two, it can be a case of trading that great experience for the headstart people back home got with their careers, rather than the great selling point on your CV some people imagine. Although the life experience and language skills could be an asset, it can take some selling in the job interview (if you get that far).”
Two great answers of a similar kind in the answers to “Question from a reader” below. Anyone else want to join the 200 word challenge?
