Having started an MA in Applied Linguistics myself, I am absolutely sure that this ‘course on communication’ was written by someone straight off such a course. Where the topic of a normal textbook chapter might be ‘crime’ or ‘love and marriage’, all the topics from this book are straight out of a Linguistics primer- body language, cross cultural communication, pauses in conversation etc. etc. Students often have less knowledge of this than of ‘things to see and do near your home’, so it is more suited for students who like to think they are learning something useful through the medium of English- perhaps as an option in long, intensive Academic Year courses or as part of a course for top executives who travel and give presentations a lot. This book is often stuck on the Business shelves in the teachers’ room, but can just as easily be used as a supplement in a General English class.
