Language and the Internet (David Crystal) mini review
Usually, I would recommend anything by David Crystal, most of the time even for someone who is not involved in linguistics or language teaching- for example the books The Cambridge Encyclopaedia of the English Language, or Language Play. This book, however, is the exception. The only conclusion I really formed from it was that the language used on the internet was one of the least interesting things about the medium, and that it was having comparatively little effect on the rest of the language. The book is also somewhat out-of-date already. It is, however, written in the usual clear and easy-to-read style of this author, and if you have a special reason for being interested in this topic I doubt you could find any easier introduction.
