I’m always surprised that EFL materials look nothing like the books I end up using to learn foreign languages, and visa versa. Well, this one does look like most of the self-study books I have used (although this is a classroom text) each chapter being based around a ‘photo story’ dialogue and drilling, analysing and practising the language the dialogue throws up. The methodology is therefore very simple but somewhat repetitive. It is most useful for students who have used similar materials before, or who have not studied for a long time and need a fixed format so you don’t waste too much classroom time giving instructions. Although the books are low level, the language presented is quite realistic (i.e. idiomatic) American English, so this is also a good option for students who are dealing with native speakers on a daily basis, but less so for those dealing with Germans, for instance.
