Teaching English in Japan- Sources Part One

The books all teachers in Japan should read Part One- The best books about Japanese language and education

I’m sitting here mourning over the 100 or so books about Japan that I will be leaving on the school bookshelves rather than taking with me, and wondering quite how many books I have managed to read in 5 years. I don’t think there are any other countries that you can find so many interesting books about, especially ones that tell you as much about the world and human nature as they do about the country name in the title. Being the person I am, the books have been one of the best things about Japan for me. However, if you aren’t such a reader, do not despair- the five books below will be enough to make you aculturally sensitive teacher and keep you stimulated by understanding the things around you for at least a year or two:

1. Learning to Go to School in Japan

Working with Japanese preschool age kids can be an almost manic depressive swing between thinking they are the cutest, nicest kids in the world and wondering how they get away with stuff like hitting their teachers. This book not only explains how those two seemingly contradictary things are connected, but also explains how preschool education in Japan affects and reflects the whole society. Reading this book was the first time in Japan I thought “If you look at it that way, it all makes sense”, and inspired me to try and explain everything else on my JapanExplained blog.

2. Japanese English: Language and Culture Contacts

Not Engrish.com the book, but a serious and yet suprisingly readable examination of how English is used in the Japanese language and what that can tell us about Japanese society and languages in general. It can also help you misuse English expressions in the right way when speaking Japanese and understand and correct your students when they bring them into English.

3. Tuttle New Dictionary of Loanwords in Japanese

As you can imagine from the title, this is not a book to read through. Nonetheless, I did (!) and found it improved my Japanese, my teaching and led to loads of Japanese English worksheets. The introduction also gives a short introduction to the surprisingly systematic changes the Japanese make to English pronunciation, helping you gain the ability to change any English word into understandable Japanese. You’ll also learn a few words of some other languages or find out how you can use the languages you know in Japanese.

4. Preschool in Three Cultures

… being the US, China and Japan. Not only does it tell you quite a lot about all three societies, but also introduces a whole new way of doing research- asking teachers and parents to comment on what goes on in the other countries too.

5. The Japanese Educational Challenge

Although written when the marketing department of Free Press wanted a Japan-catching-up-panic book back in the 80s, the author has managed to turn it into more of general examination of the differences between Japanese and American society and education, and what if anything they can learn from each other.

Also worth a mention

Safety and Challenge for Japanese Learners of English

Although I don’t still use any of the activities in this book, it did inspire me to try and find my own principles for teaching in Japan and prompted some interesting pondering on how much you can generalise by nationality.

Teaching English to Children in Asia

Written by David Paul, director of David English House and founder of the great ETJ (English Teachers in Japan) teachers’ association. He can be a bit dogmatic about his child-centred ideas and you’ll almost certainly hear the same things if you go to one of his workshops, for example as part of the Introductionary Certificate in Teaching English to Children (recommended), but again it is guaranteed to prompt some serious reflection on how much change you need to make to CELTA-type techniques in a place like Japan.

Try to ignore his claims to explain the “uniqueness” of Japan (and certainly ignore all his other books), but have at least a flick through this book for the kinds of words your students will get stuck on when trying to explain themselves in English because there are no real English equivalents. Also good for painless Japanese study and appearing to be a Japan expert/guru/unbearably pretensious prat when you drop words like wabi sabi into conversation back home.

As mentioned in a comment or two below (and in every other sentence in my real life conversation), I am off on my reasonably well deserved hols from Friday and won’t even be looking at a computer screen for the next 10 days. Surprising things about British and American English

I’ve been reading through the new Cambridge Grammar of English. Not something I usually do for pleasure (honestly!), but got a free copy for TEFL.net reviews and so felt like I ought to examine at least some parts in detail- and now I am reading it for pleasure!

Maybe the most interesting thing is that the use of corpora rather than just common sense (otherwise known as native speaker intuition) means there are bits on almost every page where you go “Really?” Below is a list of the “Oh yes, I suppose so.” and “No, I really don’t think so” moments so far based on British and American English. Most good science throws out counterintuitive things like this. Unfortunately, so does most bad science, so I’d appreciate it if you would comment on how the things below match with your own experience and instinct- there are a few I have doubts on myself.

- In AmE, the score in “The Seattle Sea Hawks beat the Cincinnati Reds 7-O is pronounced” “seven nothing” or “seven to nothing” or “seven zip”
 
- “Four from nine is/leaves five” is okay in BrE
 
- The form in “Eleven hundred pounds” (rather than “one hundred one hundred”) is more popular in AmE than BrE

- “isn’t” (rather than ’s not) is many times more frequent in BrE than AmE

- Interrogative tags are about four times more frequent in BrE than in AmE
 
- The “do” in reduced clauses with modal verbs
“Are you going?”
“I might do”
is only used in British English
 
- She lives on/ in Leonora Street is a Br/ Am thing

- “Must” is much more frequent in BrE than AmE
 
- “Had better” is six times more frequent in BrE
 
- “Going to” often used for direction giving (finding your way) in AmE: “You’re gonna go two blocks…”
 
- “I suppose” is much more frequent in BrE

The “Should you be teaching EAP?” quiz

If the amount of new stuff I learnt from the new book “Academic Vocabulary in Use” by Michael McCarthy and Felicity O’Dell is anything to go by (a book for students from “good Intermediate level”, not for teachers!), the answer about whether I should be teaching English for Academic Purposes is a resounding “No!”, although several things make me feel better about that:

- I detest universities as institutions and don’t want to work in one anyway
- I studied Physics, so the longest thing I ever had to write was 1500 words and no one expected me to have basic human communication skills, yet alone a grasp of academic prose
- With authors like those, I was hardly going to know everything they know
- Ditto with the Cambridge International Corpus, and anyway the whole idea of a corpus is that it is supposed to give counter-intuitive results

With those provisos to make you feel better about your results, without any further ado here is the “Should you be teaching EAP?” quiz.

Answer the questions below to see whether you should be getting into or out of the world of EAP. My own score was very nearly zero (which is why I picked them, but the first question is an easy one to get you started), so good luck. Answers in the comments section. Only the answers from the book are acceptable, so if there are several possible answers you will need to think of all of them before turning to the answer key. One point per answer, total possible score is 38.

Headline news- New Year’s resolution lasts past first week!

It might have just been an excuse to quit my gym session early, but got a sudden urge to sort TEFLtastic out. That means that my new favourite site has helped me convert all the Medical and Pharmaceutical worksheets into easily printable pdf files, and I’ve stuck them in as Word documents so you can correct my spelling mistakes before you use them as well.

Now that you can download Word documents and make all the changes you like, I’ve also started including stuff that is the raw material for a good Medical English lesson but that I didn’t get to make into a good worksheet before all my Medical English classes disappeared:
